Prayer Strategy Against Planned Parenthood
Dear friends, March 2012
In this month’s Lifesharer letter, I will be telling you about a special prayer strategy we are unveiling to be used against Planned Parenthood. It is simple in design but I believe it could be quite powerful if we undertake it together. We will be spreading the word beyond our regular borders as well. But, before I explain that new program, let me pass along for you a few of the things that have kept us busy recently.
We have had 9 “When Swing Was King” presentations since our last letter. One of our regular visits was canceled because the flu had hit the residents at that assisted living center pretty hard. WSWK continues to go really well. We’ve added another facility to our list, making it 11 places every month that receives the music, pictures, interesting narration, and personal conversation that is “When Swing Was King.” To keep our presentations as fresh as possible, I have spent many, many hours gathering new photos, recording more music and putting completely new programs together. By summer, our present number of 13 editions should be stretched to 18.
On other fronts, Claire created and sent out a batch of homemade Valentine’s Day cards and I’m always pretty busy with my Vital Signs Blog duties. This month provided a special challenge in that my computer was hit once again by a tenacious virus. It required me to forge ahead with our new Mac computer and so, even though Claire finally got the other one healthy, I do my blogging now on the Mac which is better and much more protected.
We have been out praying and sidewalk counseling in front of Planned Parenthood a few times since our last letter too. On one of these mornings, a security guard bully became especially obnoxious and called the police on us. Here we go again! However, unlike the comically pompous guard, the policemen were professional and rational and they understood we pro-lifers were doing nothing either illegal or disruptive. And so, much to the security guard’s chagrin, the police casually let us be.
There have been many hours these last few weeks spent in correspondence, phone calls and personal meetings regarding certain issues: Nebraskans Against Planned Parenthood, an upcoming Conquest event in Lincoln for FreedMen (Ron Brown’s ministry outreach), pro-life legislation efforts before the Unicameral, and the proposal of the Omaha City Council to grant special protections to homosexuals and other sexual deviants.
Regarding that last matter, we were pleased to be a part of a letter-writing meeting hosted by Quint and Carol Coppi. Almost all of the letters which were posted on the City Council’s website came from that single meeting! That certainly says something about how keenly felt are the handwritten letters Christians write but, alas, it also suggests that there were but a very few Christians who did so. Let’s improve that, shall we? Our recent invitations to pastors to help them set up letter-writing parties like those we do with Vital Signs finally attracted some interest. One church has already said yes and I had morning coffee with another assistant pastor who wants to set one up for his church. Vital Signs is hosting ours on Monday, March 19th at our place beginning at 7 PM.
Let’s see...what else? Well, I spoke to a couple of groups of AWANA kids and at another event which involved both AWANA kids and their parents. While working on this letter I was called away to give an interview to a local TV reporter regarding the city council proposal. I’ve continued to prepare and deliver the sermons at Faith Bible Church every Sunday. (I just finished a series on Galatians which is available on the Vital Signs website.) And Claire and I judged a few speeches in a five-state speech contest for homeschool students.
Recent weeks have also seen a few social events. These include hosting lunch and dinner parties, visits with neighbors, scooping snow for neighbors, talking with a couple whose wedding I’ll be conducting this summer, a family gathering in Lincoln, and Claire’s meeting with a group of her high school classmates. Claire also presided over the last business affairs of my Mom which the state has finally settled.
So, yes, it’s been a busy few weeks and, as always, we thank all of you whose prayers, encouragement and financial support help keep us available to take on these various ministries.
Okay. Let’s now get down to our new prayer program. As I said earlier, it’s a pretty basic approach. We are encouraging Christians to join in a strategic prayer effort against the violent villainy of Planned Parenthood. (In the postscript of this letter, you’ll read a quick review from a Vital Signs Blog post of 8 reasons why the wicked organization needs to be opposed.) Our new prayer program is one which we hope will result in a greater number of Christians praying against Planned Parenthood, more time in prayer and, finally, in bringing greater specificity to our unified intercession. We’re calling it “3 for 5” and here’s how it works.
We’re asking believers to covenant together to pray at least 3 minutes a day on the 5 weekdays about specific issues related to Planned Parenthood’s ongoing assaults on the culture of life. That could mean 3 minutes of prayer added to one’s morning meditations, a minute prayer lifted up three times a day…whatever. And for every weekday, we’re encouraging prayers aimed at particular targets. Again, this way we’re praying more AND praying for the very same things, agreeing with one another and the Holy Spirit to oppose the evil deeds of this mega-abortion corporation. Below are the specific targets for each weekday, a sample prayer and a Scripture “springboard.”
1) Monday’s focus: Pray for Planned Parenthood’s scheduled victims for the week.
“This week many young women are scheduled to have their babies destroyed by Planned Parenthood abortionists. Many more will abort children through the various chemicals that the business sells. Father, we pray for many of these minds to be changed. We ask that these moms will choose instead the guidance and loving assistance of pro-life family members, churches and pregnancy aid centers. And we also pray that those who have already been exploited and victimized by Planned Parenthood find healing in the cross of Christ.”
Scripture exhortation: Deuteronomy 30:19 -- “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants.” (NASB)
2) Tuesday’s focus: Pray for shame and scandal to be the portion of Planned Parenthood.
“Holy Lord Jesus, today I pray that the immoral and violent nature of Planned Parenthood be increasingly revealed to the public. Raise up journalists, lawyers, politicians, educators, celebrities, business leaders and more to expose the organization’s promotion and enablement of abortion, sexual perversion, promiscuity, and misuse of government funds. Take from Planned Parenthood their financial support, their partnerships and their false cloak of respectability.”
Scripture exhortation: Ephesians 5:11 --“And so do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them.” (NASB)
3) Wednesday’s focus: Pray for spiritual conversion among Planned Parenthood employees and supporters.
“Please, Lord Jesus, reveal to those who work with, promote or otherwise support Planned Parenthood the organization’s inherent evils. Give them a new understanding of the sanctity of life, marriage, family and purity. And with repentance and conversion, make of these ‘born again’ people effective servants of Your grace and holiness.”
Scripture exhortation: 2 Corinthians 5:17 -- “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things are passed away; behold, new things have come.” (NASB)
4) Thursday’s focus: Pray for those who stand against Planned Parenthood’s assaults on the culture of life.
“Dear Jesus, today we earnestly pray for all those who seek to defend the least of these and to restore a sanctity of life ethic to our nation. We pray for those who, in various ways, prayerfully oppose the barbarism of Planned Parenthood. We ask You to provide wisdom, protection and spiritual power in abundance for sidewalk counselors, clergy, medical professionals, pro-life educators and especially for those who serve with pro-life pregnancy aid ministries.”
Scripture exhortation: Timothy 1:7 -- “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.” (NASB)
5) Friday’s focus: Pray for a dramatic reformation of sexual ethics among American youth.
“Father, today’s prayer is for fresh and compelling conviction of Your truths regarding modesty, purity, self-control, and the blessedness of sexual relations within marriage. Reveal these precious virtues especially to youth and to those who influence American culture. And also, Lord, please expose for all to see Planned Parenthood’s perverse and counter-productive sex-ed philosophy.”
Scripture exhortation: Philippians 4:8 -- “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” (NASB)
What do you think? We believe that anything that can help stimulate Christians to pray more regularly, more frequently and with greater purpose is wonderfully welcome. And if there’s anything that can get us on the same page, coming together in the powerful fellowship of prayer and lifting up to our Lord a common appeal – that’s a huge bonus. The prayers and Scriptures given are, of course, just samples to stimulate your individual responses. What is most important is the common focus of the day. Like I said earlier, we’re going to be passing this invitation to pro-life advocates all over the country but that’s no reason why the friends of Vital Signs Ministries can’t get started this very week. Right?
I close this month’s letter with an encore of my thanks for all your support to Claire and I as we continue this ministry. As the apostle Paul wrote to the Christians at Philippi, “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Much love & appreciation,
The postscript: “8 Reasons That I Oppose Planned Parenthood”
1) Planned Parenthood kills preborn babies for profit. Hundreds of thousands of babies. And by payments to surgical abortionists and sales of chemical abortifacients, Planned Parenthood is raking in millions of dollars every year. They are the largest abortion providing, abortion promoting business in the world.
2) Planned Parenthood is the most aggressive promoter of abortion rights in the U.S. and abroad. It's influence in Congress, the United Nations, in state governments, in social service agencies, and among government educators is huge.
3) Planned Parenthood promotes (and enables) sexual promiscuity, even among very young teenagers.
4) Planned Parenthood promotes sexual perversion and does so with obscene and blasphemous materials.
5) Planned Parenthood holds firm to the racism and elitism of its eugenics founders.
6) Planned Parenthood has been caught on many occasions in criminal cover-ups of statutory rape.
7) Planned Parenthood operates many unsafe, unsanitary abortion clinics. It has employed several abortionists who have killed adult women through botched abortions. It dispenses very dangerous abortifacient drugs in an unprofessional manner like over the phone and through "at home abortion kits." It works continually against parental rights and control. It works continually against any and all limitations on abortion.
And, oh yeah...Number 8) Planned Parenthood makes about $100,000,000 every year from American taxpayers.
